Volunteers are imperative for the American Red Cross. They compose 97% of our workforce. Without our volunteers the Red Cross could not provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and resopnd to emergencies.

To join our team of dedicated volutneers you will need to complete a Volunteer Personnel Form and background check, as well as some basic training. Volunteer Opportunities

Administrative Support

This role is vital to carrying out the daily operations of the Red Cross mission in our community. Assist in office administration in various Red Cross departments

  • Answer telephones and take messages
  • Greet visitors
  • General typing, data entry, filing and copying
  • Assist in preparation of mailings, course materials, etc.
  • Communicate with other paid and volunteer staff

Blood Donor Caller

The blood donor caller is vital to the success of the blood drive. The reminder caller will call potential donors from a pre-approved list to remind the donor they are eligible to give blood again and to inform them of the next blood drive in their area. The blood donor caller can work from the local Red Cross office or from their home.

  • Inform eligible current donors about upcoming opportunities to donate
  • Schedule and confirm donor's next appointment (as needed)
  • Check recorded information and notate any changes

Blood Drive Canteen Host

The canteen host is vital to the success of the blood drive and the safety of donors. Donors not only need something to eat and drink after donating, they need to be observed for possible reactions as well as be provided recognition and encouragement to donate again in eight weeks. Provides refreshments for donors who have completed the collection process and carefully observes donors for any possible reactions.

Blood Drive Receptionist

The receptionist position is vital to the success of the blood drive. Donors benefit greatly from having someone to help them start the donation process, and for support, recognition, and encouragement to donate again in eight weeks.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all donor information
  • Distributes required reading materials

Disaster Action Team

This role is vital in delivering the Red Cross mission to provide relief to victims of diaster and help prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

  • Provide timely response to disaster and assist victims
  • Repond to diaster scenes as assigned by Team Captain within specific time constraints
  • Provide Red Cross services (food, clothing, shelter) to disaster victims
  • Complete all Red Cross forms at disaster site
  • Provide referals to other agencies

Military After Hours Caseworker

Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Caseworkers are a vital link between military personnel and their families in our community. Red Cross provides verified emergency messages to service members and their commanders in order to keep the soldiers in touch with their families and help commanders make informed decisions regarding emergency leave.

  • Take calls during after hours (5:00 p.m.-8:30 a.m.)
  • Maintain confidentiality of caller and service member
  • Conduct an interview to obtain relevant information needed to process the request
  • Verify information received from the families
  • Complete necessary documentation
  • Route the emergency message to the appropriate Red Cross authorities
  • Ensure the day staff has the complete documentation for the case

Special Events

Assist the Red Cross in educating the community to "Be Red Cross Ready": Make a plan, build a kit and be informed. Help educate the public at special events such as health fairs, local community events and county fair through literature, website promotion and informational displays.

Volunteer Training Schedule

All training is free of charge Your first step in orientation is the on-line training available for new local, regional and national volunteers. This course will help new volunteers know what to expect in their new volunteer role with American Red Cross.

This course is available online and should be done prior to your 'welcome training' at the Chapter office on 167 Union Street, South. "Welcome training' is offered twice each month - during the day and during the evening.

All training specific to your volunteer job positions will take place once you have completed orientation. Details regarding specialized training will be discussed during your 'Welcome training' at the Chapter office.

The application for new volunteers should be completed and mailed or delivered to our Red Cross office. When you complete the application, safe it to your computer and then attach it to an email to volunteer4redcross@ctc.net. Our volunteer, volunteer coordinator will be intouch to schedule you for our next local Red Cross welcome/orientation event - held twice each month.
